Finding Student Housing and the Right Roommates

As the 2007/2008 school year winds down, many students are taking steps to find housing for the upcoming school year. Those who have just completed their programs are saying good bye to their student accommodations and the memories that were made there. What can we learn from these graduates and their experiences of student life?
One of the most significant aspects of student life can be the relationship between roommates. As some roommates can go one to being lifelong friends, many others loose touch of one another as they move forward with their futures. The 2007 movie “Reign over Me” starring: Adam Sandler,& Don Cheadle, tells the story of how a man who lost his family in the September 11 attack on New York City runs into his old college roommate. They rekindle their friendship and the results have a significant impact on both of their lives. The writer and director of this film, Mike Binder, does a great job of reminding us how important the bond can be between school roommates not only while attending school, but in the years to come.
We have all been in the situation where we loose contact with someone we were once very close to. It is often great to get together years later and catch up on the good old days. It is common to learn that two people who use to have so much in common, have evolved in such different directions that there is no longer any real common ground.
As one searches for what will likely be their home for the next 3 to 4 years, they must consider what impact their choice of a roommate will have. It will surely play a role in their college and university experience. The question is whether or not this relationship will be productive for them once they complete school.
How was your student housing experience? Have you stayed in touch with those from school? What valuable lessons did you learn outside of the classroom? Do you have tips for those just entering college and university who are looking for accommodation?
No one ever really knows what direction their lives will take. That is what makes the student years so incredibly exciting. What advice can be given to those in the process of finding housing & roommates? Don’t ignore the importance of choosing the best person to share a space with. The more compatible you are with your roommate, the more comfortable your accommodation will seem.
